Broccoli Can Turn An Old Immune System Young

Posted by: maryhealth in: ● February 22, 2009

Want some really great news?  Of course you do!

Broccoli is so unbelievably awesome that it appears as though it can actually repair and restore our immune system as we age.  There is a chemical in broccoli called sulfophone that activates antioxidants in your body, which in turn fights off all sorts of aging.  This really shouldn’t surprise us when you think about it.  After all broccoli looks a lot like a little tree so it must be good for us, right?

A team of researchers found that they were able to hit the reset switch on mice when they were pumping them full of sulforaphane.  It sounds pretty amazing but they were able to make give old mice essentially the same immune response as young mice just by giving them a ton of sulforaphane.

Now, as though this wasn’t good enough broccoli has a bunch more going for it. Only about fifty calories of broccoli are necessary to get most of your  Vitamin K, C and A for the day.  Vitamin K in particular is a tough vitamin to find in your diet and the fact that broccoli has a ton of it is alone enough to eat this vegetable.  Broccoli also has lots of fiber and B vitamins, iron, calcium, vitamin E and even some of the all important omega 3 fatty acids.  Truth is, it’s hard to find a better food to eat than broccoli.  But broccoli has another secret as well.

Broccoli fights cancer, did you know that?  Broccoli fights a wide range of cancers ranging and has other great benefits such as prevention of cataracts and macular degeneration.  You would be crazy not to eat broccoli.

Okay, so I’m not really obsessed with broccoli, but I am obsessed with the notion that what we eat can have a big effect on how we feel, how we age and what diseases come our way.  Since I switched over to an all-organic diet based largely on fruits and vegetables I have found my health improve in almost every way.  I have more energy, I dropped weight and my painful periods have become much more manageable.  I have every reason to believe that this major dietary change has played a key role in making all of this happen.

A few simple changes such as incorporating green tea, blueberries and broccoli into your diet could literally save your life.  In my future blog entries, I will explore other simple changes to your diet and life that you can make that will have a big impact.  I am all about keeping it simple, but I know that if you are like me and it gets too complicated you might just say, “forget it.”  And that would be sad.

This is really good information. I love broccoli, and your post makes me want to eat even more of it. I’ve raised my kids loving veggies, and telling them they’re good for them. But who knew just how much?
