Plums-A More Powerful Friend to Your Diet Than the Blueberry?

Posted by: maryhealth in: ● February 21, 2009

I am all about healthy living and healthy eating. If you’ve been reading my other blog posts you know that I like learning about new and often cutting edge easy things that one can do to help overall health.

Medical science is advancing at a rate that we have never seen before. You don’t have to be a scientist to see that this is the case. A simple evaluation at the speed and frequency of breakthroughs and you can quickly see that the pace of progress in general has picked up in the last few years.

Recently I heard something that was pretty shocking. Did you know that plums might be a more impressive fruit than the much-heralded blueberry? A recent study of plums by AgriLife Research indicates that plums may be more loaded with antioxidants and phytonutrients than even the blueberry.

Now, this is not to say that blueberries are some kind of slouch. The tiny blueberry is probably one of the very best foods known to man. Scientists believe that blueberries can do wonders to keep the brain healthy and that is just for starters. Blueberries are believed to protect the heart, defend against cataracts and fight cancer. There is much exciting research being done with blueberries that indicate they offer significant protection against macular degeneration. So learning that plums might be more beneficial to overall health than blueberries was something of a shocker.

The researchers are also looking into peaches and nectarines as well and think that these fruits might be upgraded to “super” soon as well. Antioxidants are key for your diet due to the fact that actually fight the oxidative damage that occurs inside your body. It is this damage that can cause a wide-variety of diseases and even death.

I am always on the lookout for any new edge both for myself personally and now for the readers of my blog. Thus, I was pretty interested to read that plums appeared to inhibit the growth of in vitro breast cancer. Any simple change that I can make to my diet that could prevent a disease like breast cancer from raising its ugly head is a definite winner in my book. There has been a lot of research discussing how blueberries do a great job in helping keep the brain healthy, but now research is saying that plums may be even better.

One thing is definitely for sure; I will be adding plums to my diet immediately. It could be that plums could be let another weapon in the fight against breast cancer and such a tasty one at that!
